Who are NRDC consultants paid $49.9 Million?

According to U.S. tax returns, between 2000 and 2007, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) paid $US 49.9 Million to "professional consultants."

$US $49.9 Million sounds like a lot - and it is - but its only 8.7% of the NRDC's total revenues over the same period. U.S. tax returns show that between 2000 and 2007, the NRDC had revenues of $US 569 Million.

I can't help but wonder.... who are NRDC's consultants?
